Court of Appeal accedes to DPP's application for review of a sentence for rape, finding that it was unduly lenient where the offence was of the gravest kind, being oral and vaginal rape of a six-year-old child with gratuitous violence.

Original sentence: 6 years with 4 years suspended for a period of 4 years
Appeal by: prosecution (statutory application)
Outcome: sentence varied to 5 years, being headline sentence of 12 years, reduced to 9 years in view of guilty plea and further to 5 years on basis of respondent's age and health issues and the disappointment of an increase in sentence
