Court of Appeal dismisses appeals against sentence and refuses DPP's application for review of sentences of the appellants' co-accused, finding that the Special Criminal Court had been entitled to impose the sentences in respect of each convicted person.
Offences: providing assistance to an unlawful organisation contrary to s. 21A and membership of an unlawful organisation, contrary to section 21 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939
Original sentences:
first accused (offence of assisting): three years and nine months
second accused (offence of assisting:) four years imprisonment
third accused (offence of membership): five years and six months
fourth accused (offence of membership): three years and nine months
fifth accused (offence of membership): sixteen months imprisonment
Appeal by: defence (first to third accused); prosecution by way of statutory application (fourth and fifth accused)
Outcome: appeals against severity dismissed and DPP's application for review refused
