High Court imposes a one-year suspension on a solicitor, effective from 20th March 2025, due to professional misconduct related to the maintenance of proper books of account and compliance with Solicitors Accounts Regulations. The solicitor admitted to nine charges of misconduct following an inspection of their practice. The Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) had recommended a restricted practicing order and financial penalties, but the High Court, acknowledging the solicitor's subsequent lack of insight and attempt to resile from admissions, opted for suspension with conditions over closing the solicitor's practice. Upon completion of the suspension, the solicitor must demonstrate appropriate training in ethics, accounts management, and compliance to the Law Society's satisfaction. Additionally, for three years, the solicitor must provide biannual reports from an accountant affirming satisfactory maintenance of client and office accounts and must assist with any Law Society inspections. The co-signatory requirements on the solicitor's practice are to remain in place for the time being, with the court retaining the option to revisit this decision.
